I enjoyed taking portraits at the Moses Mabhida Stadium, there are many large areas with solid colours, which provide great backgrounds. There is plenty of negative space. The light spaces help the subject stand out, and the black box was a lovely discovery.I encourage anyone to use it as a backdrop when taking photos by the stadium. The pillars by the Virgin Active Classic Club also give a great backdrop.
Overall, the shoot was successful. My only regret is only carrying the large lens. It was my first time using it, and I wouldn’t recommend it for close up photos of architecture. It’s fine for portraits, although it can make you do a lot of stepping back in order to frame your subject correctly.
The general sharpness of my images has improved, but can be better still. Manual focus really does help. In future, I need to pay attention to the movement of the whole body. There is one photo (below) that I really liked, which was ruined by one hand being blurry.
Aside from that, I encourage you to shoot outside the stadium. Inside is a bit busy with all the coloured seats. You’ll have to carefully select your colours if shooting inside.
